Please remember, starting next week on Monday, August 15 the kick-off time for all early games on all fields except Caton’s 1 and Willie Pratt will be at 6:00 PM, 30 minutes earlier than usual. This might be a good time to double-check your schedule for the last few games of the season!

Duna Hungary vs. GKSSA Selects

Today the GKSSA was proud to host an exhibition game featuring the men’s team of Duna Hungary, who are visiting from Budapest. Their opposition was a collection of players from almost every Division A team. The GKSSA Selects won this particular international friendly by a score of 4 – 2. Thanks to all the soccer supporter who watched this match at the Italo Club, a good time was had by all.

We are pleased to see that the game was covered by the Kingston Whig-Standard. (However, where you read “Ellerbeck”, please change that to “Heldebrecht”. Also, Duna switched keepers at half-time, so the dazzling save on Luke Corey that preceded the Selects’ third goal was made by Kristian Chalupa.)

Nets at the Frontenac SS Field

There are now nets on the Frontenac SS field goal posts on a trial basis. With luck they’ll remain there for the balance of the season.

Nets at the Frontenac SS Field

Until further notice, each team playing at the Frontenac SS field will be required to provide their own net, as well as put it up and take it down for each game.

There should soon be permanent nets there for the balance of the season, but this may not happen until early July. We’ll make an announcment here when the nets are in place.

The teams most likely to need a net for their next game at Frontenac SS are Cosme Auto and Limestone City FC II (June 28), and Rangers and Pilot House LCFC II (June 29).

Men’s Team from Budapest Visits

On Sunday, July 3rd at 1 PM at the Italo-Canadian Club, the GKSSA is pleased to be hosting an exhibition game featuring a men’s soccer team visiting from Budapest, Hungary. There will be a barbecue and refreshments on site.

We’re looking forward to making a good impression and giving the visiting team pleasant lasting memories of their time in Kingston. As such, we’re encouraging everyone to attend what should be an enjoyable afternoon.

Trial Permit Policy

Starting with the 2005 Outdoor season, the GKSSA has introduced a system for teams being able to use additional GKSSA players on a trial basis.

This is intended to be used when a team might otherwise be short-handed, or when they’re trying to discover if the player and the team are compatible, without having to sign the player on a full-time basis.

For details of how this works, click here: Trial Permit Policy.

GKSSA Teams Win Local Tournament

Congratulations to the following GKSSA teams that won their divisions in the 20th annual Porto Soccer Team Outdoor Tournament, held June 4th and 5th:

A Free Laws of the Game Refresher to be held on Thursday, June 9th

Christian Palavicino, Assistant District Referee Co-ordinator, will be speaking and answering your questions at a information session about the Laws of the Game, and their application in the GKSSA, this Thursday, June 9th at 6:20 pm. This free 'referee clinic' will be held in a conference room at the Kingston Military Sports Community Center, at RMC.

All interested parties are encouraged to attend to foster a better understanding between the referees and the teams. It is important that everyone knows exactly what constitutes a handball, how offsides are called, and what makes a foul a foul. We’ve probably all seen instances when players and referees don’t agree on these things. Ignoring for the moment that both referees and players are both infallible, this session will help ensure that everyone understands the rules and their interpretation.

Christian’s responsibilities include referee organization, education, improvement, and supervision. All teams should try to have a representative in attendance.

While everyone is welcome and there is no charge for attending, it is necessary that you register in advance, simply by contacting GKSSA Secretary Henk Kuchlein.

New GKSSA Director

The GKSSA is pleased to announce that Pierre Vanderhout of Division C’s Sleep Factory United has joined the executive as a Director. Welcome, and thank you Pierre.

Revised Schedule for Division A is Now On-line

The revised ten-team schedule for Division A is now on-line. The four non-Scarpazza Homes matches previously scheduled for this week are unchanged, but all other matches may now be different than the earlier schedule. All Division A teams should discard their previously saved or printed schedule and refer to the new one.

The only non-Division A game that was affected by this was B29 between Maple Leaf FC and ihMyBar FC on June 17. It now kicks off at 6:30 PM instead of 8:30 PM.

Scarpazza Homes Withdraws From Division A for 2005

The Scarpazza Homes team will not be fielding a team this season as originally planned. Consequently, Division A will have ten, not eleven, teams for the outdoor season. A new match schedule for Division A will be available shortly.

The Alcan Field Does Not Come With Nets This Year

For all games at the Alcan field this year, each team must provide and put up one goal net.

Each Team Must Have Keys to Caton’s Pasture Fields

Please ensure that your team has keys to the locks at Caton’s Pasture when you are playing at either of the two Caton’s fields. The referees are not allowed to jump over the fence. No keys, no refs, no game.

The home team is responsible for opening all of the gates (not just a few), turning on the lights when needed, turning off the lights after games, and locking all gates. Failure to do so will result in the home team forfeiting the game.

If your team does not have keys, please contact Maureen Sakell to make arrangements to get a set as soon as possible.

May 16th Marks the Start of GKSSA’s 2005 Outdoor Season

As of Saturday, May 8th, the GKSSA 2005 Outdoor schedule is available on-line. As of this writing, a very few games still need to have a pitch assigned to them, and not all of the fixtures for cup games are set, but these final details will be settled soon. The GKSSA is indebted to Terry “XcelScheduleMaster” Bagnariol, Alex “He’s a perl” Fletcher, and the anonymous webmaster for their efforts.

2004-05 team name changes

As happens each season, there are some new teams and some teams that change names. This is intended to be a short listing of each.

Referee Clinic Announced for May 28th & 29th

A level 4 clinic for people interested in becoming referees will be held on May 28th and 29th, 2005 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM each day at the Clippers Club house at Jim Beattie Park. Please contact the SOSA office at 546-6642 to register.

Team Pages

Did you know that each team now has their own page on the gkssa.org web site? Each team page lists the players that have scored goals, earned a shut out, or that have been carded, as well as other team information.

You can search for a team by going to the team.php page (or from the search.php page). You can also go to a team’s page by clicking on their uniform wherever you see it, or by clicking on the team name in a schedule listing.

Senior Outdoor Soccer Tournament for June 4th & 5th

The Porto Soccer Team is holding their 20th annual outdoor soccer tournament on June 4th & 5th. They are now accepting team applications within four divisions: Men’s Competitive, Men’s Recreational, Open Women’s, and Men’s Oldtimers. The entry fee is $300 per team.

For more information or to enter contact Abel Almeida by phone at (613) 561–0672 or by e-mail at . Plus, here’s a link to the registration form for the tournament.

GKSSA Director Needed

The GKSSA Executive needs another Director and since the no one from the B Division is currently participating in the Executive we’d prefer to have the new Director come for a B Division team, although that is not a requirement.

If you are interested in helping men’s soccer in Kingston through the GKSSA, or if you would like to learn more about the role of a Director, please contact any one of the Executive.

New GKSSA Vice President

The GKSSA is pleased to announce that as of January 15th, Terry Bagnariol has assumed the role of Vice President. This position was previously held by Savas Stratis who has recently resigned. The GKSSA would like to thank Terry for stepping in; we’re fortunate to have volunteers like Terry and we’re happy that we’ll continue to benefit from his knowledge and enthusiasm in his new role.

Limestone City Football Club

A new football (as in soccer, of course) club has been formed in Kingston. They have provided the GKSSA with a letter of introduction for all that are interested, and we share it with you here: Introducing the Limestone City Football Club.

AGM

The 2004 AGM was held on Wednesday, November, 24 at the Portsmouth Olympic Harbour.

The positions of President, Registrar, Secretary, and Statistican were up for re-election. In each case the incumbant was acclaimed to another two-year term. Congratulations and many thanks to Luca, Maureen, Henk, and Alex!

Also, the executive was pleased to welcome Brian Drew as a new Director. Thanks for your participation Brian!
